Coastguard set for 250km Sahara challenge

A Coastguard Rescue Officer from Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team is gearing up for an epic charity challenge to fundraise for The Coastguard Association.

Rachel Nicolls-Lee has signed up for an event described as the ‘toughest footrace on earth’ – an event which will take Rachel on a 250km route over six days through the Sahara Desert, completely unaided!

The Marathon Des Sables ultra-marathon will see Rachel running over 250km across the endless sand dunes, rocky jebels and white-hot salt plains of the Sahara Desert in Southern Morocco, carrying everything she needs to survive on her back all in aid to raise money for The Coastguard Association – the charity dedicated to supporting Coastguard personnel and their dependents in their time of need.

With just under six weeks to go before the event, Rachel has been getting the miles under her belt around Falmouth carrying full pack weight.

The 46th Annual General Meeting

On Saturday 19^th March 2022, the Coastguard Association hosted its 46^th Annual General Meeting.

Taking place in the Skegness Masonic Centre, the national committee were joined by Coastguard Rescue Officers from Skegness and Wrangle Coastguard Rescue Teams as well as several other members from across the country.

The minutes of the previous AGM, which last year took place virtually via zoom, were reviewed and agreed. During the meeting, updates were provided by the Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer, Welfare, Secretary, Public Relations, Coastline Magazine and central branch before branch updates were provided by those in attendance.

Following the updates, Stuart Arundel was re-elected as the Chairman and will remain in office for the forthcoming five years. The committee said a fond farewell to the current Treasurer, Alan Fisher, who has been in post for the last 14 years and has played a significant role in getting the Coastguard Association to its current stable and solid position, with the committee voting in Steve Brooks as the new Treasurer.

The Chairman’s Award was presented to the Hastings and East Sussex Branch for their fundraising work.

The date for the 47^th AGM was set for Saturday 25^th March 2023 with Hastings and East Sussex Branch agreeing to host with a venue to be confirmed.

The Coastguard Association is the charity which helps Coastguards and their dependents in their time of need, with every person involved in the Coastguard Association doing so on a voluntary basis and giving up their own time to help those in need of assistance.
